How-to guide

Everything you need to run a night with RollPlayRadio, from your first layered mix to streaming the whole table into a Discord voice channel.

Getting started

RollPlayRadio is a live ambient audio mixer for tabletop RPG. You build a soundscape by layering tracks from the library, shape it in the mixer, punctuate the big moments with stinger pads, save the moods you love as scenes, and share the mix with your table.

The quickest way in: open the Library, click a couple of cards to start them playing, then open the mixer to balance them. Everything you build lives in the player bar at the bottom of the screen, which stays with you on every page.

This page is a written reference for every part of the app. If you would rather be shown around live, the guided tour walks the same ground the first time you open the Library.

The sound library

The Library is the shelf you build from. It holds hundreds of layered sounds, each on its own card. Click a card to drop it into your live mix, and click it again to stop it.

Use search to find a sound by name, and the sort control to reorder by newest or by name. The density toggle switches between comfortable and compact card sizes so you can see more at once. Cards you are not entitled to on your plan show a lock and a tier badge.

Play or stop a card

A single click starts a card in your mix. Click it again to stop it. Playing cards stay lit so you can see your whole mix at a glance.

Shuffle

Some cards hold several takes of the same sound. When the shuffle badge is on, the card picks a fresh variation each time it loops so a bed never feels repetitive.

Loop

A loop badge means the card is a continuous bed that plays until you stop it. Cards without it are one-shots that play once and fall silent.

Libraries

Cards are organised into libraries. Fantasy is the core world; Sci-Fi is a separate library that Hero members reach first during early access.

Audio types

Every card has an audio type, shown as a small badge in its top-left corner. The type tells you the role a sound plays in your mix, so you can layer deliberately: a bed underneath, a theme over the top, and hits on cue.

Ambience

A looping environmental soundscape. This is your background bed, the sound of where the party is, from a forest at night to a crowded market.

Music

A composed instrumental track that carries the emotional tone of a moment. Layer it over ambience for a theme, a tense underscore, or a triumphant swell.

SFX

A short one-shot sound effect, made to be fired from a stinger pad at the exact beat you need it, right over whatever is already playing.

Categories

Within each library, cards are grouped into categories, and every category carries its own colour so you can scan the shelf quickly. Categories are how the mixer knows what belongs together when it auto-balances your blend.

The full set below is drawn live from the current library, so it always matches what is really on the shelf. A category marked pad-ready holds sounds you can fire from the stinger pads.

The mixer

Open the mixer and every sound in your mix gets its own channel strip. This is where you balance the blend so no single layer drowns the rest.

Volume

Each strip has its own level. Set it so ambience sits low under a theme, or push an effect forward when the moment calls for it.

Mute

Silence a single channel without removing it, then bring it straight back. Handy for holding a layer ready in the wings.

Reorder

Drag a strip by its handle to reorder your channels so the mix reads the way you think about it.

Smart Mix

One tap auto-balances the whole blend by category, so a fresh stack of tracks snaps into a sensible mix without touching every slider.

Remove

Drop a single track out of the mix from its strip when you no longer need it.

The player bar buttons

The bar pinned to the bottom of the screen is your command centre. It is always there, on every page, so the controls to run the night are never more than a glance away. Here is what each button does.

Play and pause

Start or hold your entire mix at once, without touching individual channels. The master volume beside it rides the whole blend up or down.

Show or hide the pads

Pop the row of stinger pads open when you need a hit ready, and tuck it away when you do not.

Open the mixer

Expand or collapse the full channel-strip mixer whenever you want to fine-tune the balance.

Save as a scene

The plus button saves your current mix as a named scene you can reload any time. Already on a saved scene? The cloud button updates it in place.

Clear all

Empty the whole mix in one click, ready for a clean start on the next scene.

Stinger pads

Stinger pads are for the big beats: a reveal, a clash, a death. Assign a sound to a pad and fire it on cue, layered right over your live mix without interrupting the ambience underneath.

You can fire a pad with a click or with the number keys 1 to 8. Only cards from pad-ready categories can be assigned, so the pads stay stocked with true one-shots. Pads ride along to Discord and Listen Together too, so every table hears the hit.

Scenes

A scene is a saved snapshot of a mix: which tracks are playing and at what levels. Build the perfect tavern or the perfect ambush once, save it, and fire it back into any session with a single click.

Scenes are the building blocks of your prep. Stack up a personal library of moods for your campaign, and your free plan gives you room to start; higher tiers raise the number you can keep.

Scene Builder

New to a library, or short on time before the session? Build a Scene is a guided wizard that assembles a starter mix in a few taps, auditioning live as you go, then saves it straight to your Scenes. Open it from the Build a Scene button on the Scenes page.

Every step after the first is optional, so you can stop and save the moment the mix feels right. Picking your first location clears the current mix for a clean canvas, and everything you choose plays immediately so you can hear the scene take shape. If you are out of scene slots it will point you to free one up or upgrade.

Location

Pick the place your players are in. This is the one required layer: a looping bed, from a bustling tavern to a dripping dungeon, that the rest of the scene sits on.

Weather

Optionally layer a weather bed over the top, like rain or wind, or choose clear skies to skip it.

Travel

Say whether the party is staying put or on the move. Traveling adds a movement bed so a journey feels like one.

Mood

Optionally pick a mood and the builder adds a matching music track. If nothing fits yet it quietly stays ambience-only, so a build never breaks.

Events

Optionally arm the stinger pads with one-shot effects for what might happen, like a monster appearing or a spell going off, ready to fire live.

Name and save

Give the scene a name and save it. It lands in your Scenes with every layer and armed pad, becomes the active scene in the player, and keeps playing so you are ready to run. Fine-tune each track volume in the player any time.

Sessions

Traveler+

A session chains your scenes into an ordered set list for the night ahead. Line them up in the order you expect to need them, then glide between them mid-game. Each transition crossfades on its own, so the sound never cuts out.

Sessions are ideal for a planned encounter or a whole evening of play: prep once, then drive the night without hunting for the next mood.

Listen Together

Traveler+

Listen Together shares your live mix with your whole online table. Spin up a private link and send it round; anyone who opens it hears exactly what you are playing, right in their browser.

Your players just need a free account to listen along, with nothing to install. Change the mix on your end and every listener hears it instantly.

Stream to Discord

Adventurer+

On Adventurer and up, our Discord bot joins your voice channel and streams your live mix to everyone in it. No virtual audio cables, no second account, and no screen-share tricks.

Link your Discord account from your Account page, invite the bot to your server, and send it into a voice channel. Change the mix in the app and the whole party hears it in sync.

Community Tavern

The Tavern is a shared board of player-made scenes. Browse mixes crafted by game masters everywhere, load them into your own board, and like the ones you want to find again. Browsing and liking are free for every signed-in member.

Once you reach Traveler, you can publish your own scenes to the Tavern for others to load.

Monthly sound polls

Traveler+

You help shape the library. Each month, Traveler members and up pitch a new sound idea and rally votes for their favourites. The creator of the winning pick earns a free month of their subscription.
